It’s so easy to spend hour after hour playing on your PS3 and tempting as it seems to do this frequently you could do yourself and your console more harm than good if you do not take the recommended precautions. I don’t want to sound like a stuffy old college professor or your parents; I just want to make you aware of how you can increase the life of your PS3 by taking great care of it and how you can look after yourself and still keep gaming enjoyable.
Hints and Tips
- One of the things you are always recommended to do with any sort of electrical equipment is to leave plenty of room for ventilation; the fans in your PS3 need to be able to get rid of the hot air they’re trying to pump out, as well as circulating the cold air around itself. Ideally you should leave a gap of about four or five inches in all directions; this will help your console function properly. Failure do so so could result in the dreaded ps3 blinking red light error.
- Dust-free is good; it may seem like a lot of hard work to keep your PS3 dust-free but it isn’t at all and you won’t have to go running around looking like a demented person trying to keep everything clean! I recommend you give your console a wipe with a micro fiber cloth (Not wet), every now and then; plus once you’ve switched it off and it’s cooled down you could always cover it with a loose piece of cloth like an old pillow case or t-shirt.
- Even though the thought of spending hour upon hour of gaming is good, it’s not that great for your body and you can get stiff joints and even risk getting blood clots forming in your legs if you don’t move around very much. Ideally you should try to get up and have a walk around at least once an hour to get your blood flowing; I once even read about a guy who would play for over twelve hours at a time and lost his life due to a blood clot reaching his brain; you don’t need to panic about this; you just need to be sensible.
- I had big trouble with my PS3 one time, it started sounding like a hoover and I thought I’d broken it and would have to wait months before I could afford another; I told a friend who suggested I turn it off and then blow hard into the fans from different directions because it sounded like there was a build-up of dust. I did what my friend suggested and lo and behold it only went and worked! Now I blow into the fans every now and again and it removes the dust that is there.
- Always turn your PS3 off at the console and never at the wall until the console is properly turned off; if you do this it will go a long way in preventing problems with your discs and memory cards; many years ago when I had the first PlayStation I turned it off while a game was loading and had to buy a new game; thankfully and luckily my console was alright.
Don’t be scared!
These tips aren’t meant to scare you and make you obsessed about cleaning your PS3 and using it correctly; they are there to help you and as long as you keep your console clean and use it sensibly you should have no problems at all.
Read MorePS3 Features and Specifications
You may be interested in knowing a little bit more about the PS3’s features and specifications without having to go into too much detail and reading guides that don’t seem to be in plain English and are just too hard for most of us to understand!
So for those of us who want to know that little bit more without having to take a degree in computer technical stuff; here is a little bit about the features and specifications found on the PS3 with some explanation about what they are for and what they do:
A slot-loading Blu-ray disc drive that is suitable for Blu-ray movies, CD’s and of course your games. The slot has a hard drive that can come with up to 320 GB of memory depending on your chosen model.
- All PS3 Hard drives can now be up-graded and you can easily buy the extra memory and speed you need either online or from your regular games supplier. The better the speed and the more memory you have; the less likely your PS3 is to crash and your game play will be much faster.
- There is 256 MB of main memory and 256 MB of video memory which is all handled by the RSX which helps to control the graphics and make the games we play seem more life-like and real. The bigger and better the games get; the more main and video memory PlayStations will need; so expect the next model to come onto the market to have a lot more than the current PS3 has.
- Bluetooth is built into the system and can support more than five different Bluetooth devices. The wireless consoles that come with the PS3 and the additional ones that can be purchased all need the Bluetooth capability the PS3 has in order to run and work with it. This means that you can have many people playing the same game at the same time; rather than just two people at a time competing against each other.
- Every single PS3 apart from the 20 GB models have built-in Wi-Fi so that we can all connect to the internet should we need to. If you want to download games and more from the PlayStation Network, you will need to have this feature.
- PS3’s that are connected to the internet through the Wi-Fi system will now automatically be able to look for software updates whenever the console is turned on; so you know you can get the latest software and features without having to go looking for it.
- The Graphic User Interface (Which is basically what we see when we turn the console on) has nine option categories and they help the user to select what they would like to do with the console; so you can for example access the PlayStation Network, Music, Games and more. There is a tenth option but that is only displayed if you have PlayTV installed.
- Ok so this isn’t really a feature or a specification but did you know that the U.S military purchased loads of PS3’s at one time? They were rumored to have done this because they wanted to use the consoles for research purposes. I saw a documentary about a year ago that showed the military using the PS3’s so they could guide robots into warzones without risking the lives of their personnel. I think this is pretty cool and goes to show what the PS3 is capable of; plus I like to think that the hard working men and women of the U.S military also get to enjoy the consoles as much as we do.
For more information about the features and specifications you can always consult your user manual that comes in the package when you purchase your PS3.

Ok, so we’ve all played so many games that the list of those we still have left to play and perhaps ‘Conquer’ is getting shorter and shorter; perhaps there are those of us that are eagerly awaiting for a particular game or two to be released and if you are then you might be pleased to know that I can now tell you a little bit about them:
Modern Warfare 3
This game has recently been released of the PS3 and the third game The Call of Duty series promises to deliver so much more mayhem and madness than ever before while still giving you committed gamers out there the chance to play online if you so wish. This fantastic new game will probably take us all a few months to complete because the missions we have been given to do will take us all over the world and the standard of this game is very high, which is what we have all come to expect from the makers of this game who in my opinion, have set the standard for first-person shooters across the spectrum.
GTA V
If I could tell you that I have played this game then it would be a lie, but it would just be awesome if I could get a sneak peak of what is to come, wait a minute, I have, that’s right! The trailer for the very next game in the Grand Theft Auto series was released not that long ago and it promises to deliver something incredible. It looks like the people at ‘Rockstar’ have worked so hard to give us what we want each and every time they deliver the next installment. Originally rumored to be set in France, it is actually set in Southern California and is based upon a guy who’s moved there to settle down, find a wife, start a family; of course this being GTA means that nothing and I mean absolutely nothing is going to run smoothly. To date we still do not know when GTA V is going to be released but as soon as I know I will spread the word; it looks like we will have to wait in eager anticipation for a good while longer.
The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
This game is complex; it is full of characters that inter-act with you even when your stature evolves and the game is full of weird and wonderful creatures that make even your Brother look slightly human. This game is surprisingly user-friendly despite how complex it is and how difficult it may seem to get a grasp of. There have been a few changes in this game so the play-ability is better for example rather than receiving experience points when you kill someone your skill levels increase which makes trying all the more rewarding.
There are many games out there that are just so complicated and because of this the fun is taken away; thankfully you do not have that with this game and you can easily see your results in this game that is definitely user-friendly and fun to be a part of.
WWE 12
I remember a time when all WWE games seemed to be pretty much the same and I was just getting bored with the monotony of it all; thankfully though, the makers of the game THQ have decided to start again from scratch and offer us a completely new and overhauled game that is to be honest, pretty darn good! Remember how you used to love the road to Wrestlemania? Well you can love it once more as THQ have created a masterpiece that is full of opportunities and scope for so much fun and playability; this is WWE at its finest!

Gone are the days when all you can do is play (Some excellent) games on your PS3, now you can do so much more than that. When the PlayStation was launched way back in the mid-nineties none of us had any idea how much it would evolve and become so much more than a games console. Because there is a lot of competition out there, the makers of the PS3 have had to come up with some great and novel ideas that would help their games console stand out from the others; and luckily for us they have achieved just this.
We all now have the opportunity to catch up on world news and weather as well as some space and science news that has kindly been provided by Google, amongst others and not only does this help us stay in touch with the world around us but it brings us promise of some more ‘Channels’ that are determined to be bigger and better than their predecessors.
Blu-rays On Your PS3
Now you don’t even need to power off your PS3 is you fancy watching a Blu-ray movie because we can now all watch them on our consoles with minimum effort; so if you had thought about going out and buying a separate Blu-ray player then you don’t need to bother because a PS3 will play them for you instead.
If you’re one of these people like me that loves to get the latest games on the market and try them out before everyone else raves about them then you can download them if you want, from the PlayStation store; this is basically a virtual supermarket that only sells PS3-related items and that’s cool because you can get a heck of a lot of those ‘PS3-related items’ such as:
• Playable Game Demos
• Full And Complete Games
• Themes (Which give you different colored backgrounds, pictures and more)
• Movie Trailers
There is so much for you to do on your PS3 and I haven’t even told you about the PlayStation Network yet!
The PlayStation Network is a system that is found on all PS3’s and enables all of its users to log in and compete against other people from around the world; this is one of the best things about gaming these days; gone are the days when you will be stuck in your room on your own playing against the computer or whoever has happened to join you; now you can race, fight and more against someone from the other side of the planet who you may otherwise have never had the chance of competing against. It’s not just about competing though and getting your name on a scoreboard, with some games you also have the chance to win real-life prizes and get some sort of recognition for your achievements in the gaming world. The PlayStation Network is growing and it gives us all the opportunity to interact with other people on many different levels and this can only enhance the gaming process.
What’s next?
So what is next for the PS3? There have been some talks about 3D games and there were a few released on to the market but because for now you have to make sure you have compatible displays, software and the like, it is not easy for all of us to get our hands on what will I think in a few years’ time, be a major asset to the gaming industry.
